“We may not change the direction of the wind, but as one family, we can adjust our sails to reach the port of our destination” - Capt. Wilijado P. Abuid
our story
The early 1990s witnessed the golden age of the Philippine maritime manpower industry, with over 250,000 Filipinos comprising the world’s merchant marine seafarer population. By then, the country had earned a reputation for being the primary source of seamen for the global shipping and transport market. Filipino seamen, many of which were riven to the sea for lack of better employment opportunities on shore, were prized for their English language proficiency and natural affinity to the sea.
The Philippines then had a massive pool of young workers; the opportunity to become a world superpower in maritime workforce was ripe. The newly-established Commission on Higher Education (CHED), however, was concerned that there weren’t enough maritime Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the National Capital Region (NCR) that could help the country in meeting requirements to become the “Manning Capital of the World.”
Then came the brilliant vision of a simple man with grand dreams – Captain Wilijado P. Abuid to provide world-class maritime education to the Filipino youth.
Capt. Abuid, his wife Jayne, daughter Arlene, corporate lawyer and educator Atty. Santiago Pastor, marine officer and academician Dr. Felicito Dalaguete, and a well-rounded group of like-minded people came together to build an educational institution that would change the face of local maritime education.
It was August 16, 1993. The Asian Institute of Maritime Studies or AIMS was born.
Pathways the Seas
The Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS) has yet again added another milestone as it reached its 24th founding year of continuously providing world-class maritime and business education. With the theme “24th PATHWAYS TO THE SEAS”, the institution is moving full speed ahead towards its 20/20 vision for the year 2020.
AIMS forerunners were Capt. WILIJADO P. ABUID, a former Navy Officer and a successful maritime educator and trainor; Atty. SANTIAGO N. PASTOR, a corporate lawyer, banker and educator; Dr. FELICITO P. DALAGUETE, a marine officer, academician and educational training consultant; Mrs. JAYNE O. ABUID, the lady who provides spirit and moral guide; and Dr. ARLENE ABUID-PADERANGA, a management specialist with background in Architecture, Theatre, and Design. As one, along with other incorporators, they laid down their noble intent of unyielding commitment towards upgrading
The Founding of AIMS
It is not an elusive dream when one aspires, commits himself and starts to realize a vision in his own way. Take it from Capt. Wilijado P. Abuid, an “Officer and a Gentleman”, who was successful in providing education and training services in the maritime field. The Captain, in his lifetime had continuously conceived and actualized his noble vision of expanding and enhancing maritime services.
Sometime in July 1993, under his able leadership, a group of thirteen (13) dedicated educators and merchant marine officers activated and forged ahead their commitment in establishing an institute of higher learning, the Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS).
The forerunners behind AIMS, namely: Capt. WILIJADO P. ABUID †, a former Navy Officer and a successful maritime educator in the field of training and upgrading; Atty. SANTIAGO N. PASTOR, a corporate lawyer, banker and educator; Dr. FELICITO P. DALAGUETE, a marine officer and an academician with expertise in marine education and training; Mrs. JAYNE O. ABUID, a business woman who is known internally as the values provider and moral guide; ARLENE ABUID-PADERANGA, Ed.D., a management specialist with background in Architecture and Design, along with other incorporators laid down their noble intent of unyielding commitment towards upgrading the qualification and competency of the maritime manpower through modern approaches in maritime education and training.
Thus, on 13th of August 1993, AIMS was legally registered as a non-stock educational institution, and was issued government accreditation by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to offer Customs Administration and Merchant Marine Courses.
AIMS is strategically located at Roxas Boulevard fronting Manila Bay. The campus, with its training facilities housed at AIMS Tower was opened with a firm commitment to provide quality education and make a difference in the maritime education sector. In 1999, another site at A. S. Arnaiz Ave. corner F. B. Harrison St. was inaugurated to greet the new millennium towards more intensive and comprehensive education and training. In 2005, a new site (a six-storey building) was opened at Roxas Boulevard to house the Maritime College. The edifice is also expected to house the MARITIME KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE where libraries and an envisioned museum will be opened to the public.
To date, AIMS is one of the leading institutes that provide relevant and adequate instruction and training services as manifested by its ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System Certification from American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) conforming to STCW ’95 Standards and National Requirements.

The Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS) is a non-stock, non-profit educational institution comprised of five schools, namely: School of Merchant Marine (SMM), School of Maritime Business (SMB), School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA), School of Heritage Education (SHE), and the School of Graduate Studies (SGS). It is a specialized maritime higher learning institution committed to the development of the Philippine maritime industry.
School of Maritime Affairs (SMA)

It sets high standards for seafaring training and education. It also educates professionals in the seafaring business such as port manager and customs broker.
School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA)
On the other hand, the School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA) focuses on onshore operations and ocean engineering. In preparation for Globalization 4.0 which predicts an increase in onshore support system and a decrease in manning operations as a result of automation, the school focuses on setting the education benchmark to support the onshore operations of the maritime industry of the Philippines. It covers domains such as ship repair and maintenance, naval architecture and design, and port operations.
School of Heritage Education (SHE)
Alongside the technical locus of the institution, the School of Heritage Education (SHE) focuses on promoting the maritime art, culture, and history of the Philippines through entertainment. It contextualizes the Philippine maritime identity through the culture and the arts. Currently, a lot of Filipino performers globally such as cruise ships performers are underemployed since they did not undertake a formal training in performing arts. The school intends to professionalize the performing arts industry and support Filipino performers.
School of Graduate Studies (SGS)
